The Young product dismantled England's top order removing Jason Roy (28), Joe Root (28) and Joe Denly (11) before lunch on day five.
He claimed further scalps of Ben Stokes (6), Moeen Ali (4) and Stuart Broad (0) as the Australians secured a thumping 251-run victory before tea.
It marked Australia's first win in an Ashes Test match at Edgbaston since 2001 when Steve Waugh was at the helm.
"There's still four Tests to go and we aren't here to win the first Test at Edgbaston - we're here to win the Ashes," Australia captain Tim Paine told media after the win at Birmingham.
"We're obviously happy to win the first Test. It's a huge step in the right direction, but we're certainly not satisfied with that. We're over here to do something that a lot of teams from Australia have struggled to do."
At the start of play on day five England required 384 runs to win while Australia needed 10 wickets.
Pat Cummins quickly removed Rory Burns (11) before Lyon chimed in as England limped to 4-85 at lunch.
Cummins (4-32) and Lyon (6-49) combined for all 10 wickets to restrict England all out for 146.
Earlier in the Test, Australia was in huge trouble at 8-122 on day one.
The match was saved, in Australia's perspective, by batsman Steve Smith who completed a rare achievement becoming only the fifth Australian to score two centuries (144, 142) in both innings of an Ashes Test.
The last to do this was Matthew Hayden in 2002 at the Gabba, Steve Waugh in 1997 at Old Trafford, Arthur Morris in 1947 and Warren Bardsley in 1909.
The Edgbaston Test marked Smith's return to the Test arena after receiving a 12 month ban for his role in the ball tampering scandal in South Africa last year.
Meanwhile, Lyon's six wicket haul makes him only the fourth Australian to reach 350 Test wickets.
He joins fine company in Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
The second Test begins August 14 at Lords.
