Canteen Managers, Principals and special guests gathered to celebrate the move of all public schools canteens in NSW to the new Healthy School Canteen Strategy.
In the Young, Boorowa, Harden and Temora region, all of the NSW Department of Education primary and secondary schools now successfully meet the new strategy in an incredible achievement making the cluster of towns' leaders in the state in having both primary and high schools meeting the strategy.
Young High School was the first high school in NSW to meet the strategy and Maimuru was the first school in the Murrumbidgee to offer 100 percent everyday foods on their menu.
The strategy is for canteen menus to include at least 75 percent 'everyday' food and drinks and no more than 25 percent 'occasional' items which have at least a 3.5 Health Star Rating. The strategy has been led by the Department of Education in partnership with NSW Health.
Young Public School Principal, Edwina Wymer, is delighted her canteen now has these healthy food and drink choices.
"We are proud to know our school is offering these healthier choices and the food we offer our students is the healthiest it can be," she said.
Director of Education Leadership for the Cootamundra Network, Carolynne Merchant, presented awards to the canteen managers.
Health Promotion Officer Barb Manwaring has worked with these local school canteens over the past 24 months supporting and guiding them to meet the new strategy.
"The canteen managers in this small pocket of the state have been incredible in their commitment to implementing the strategy early and should all be congratulated," Ms Manwaring said. "They are also demonstrating that it's possible to have a healthy and profitable canteen. These canteens are now leaders in not only the Murrumbidgee region but the whole state in meeting this new strategy."
