"It is brilliant," local dog owner Kris Behler said.
"I have an older dog and a young dog and it means the older dog can sit with me while the younger one runs around."
As much as Kris and her pups love the new area they agree that it will be a work in progress.
"With some shade and equipment it will be fantastic," she said.
"Hilltops Council has done a lot for the community recently but they can't do it all at once."
The new area is located in the south east portion of the Young Showground facility in the top corner of Murringo and McDonnell's Roads with locals already making the most of it.
However, despite the facility being there some locals have still been letting their dogs run around off their leads in the main showground facility where horses, vehicles and other walkers are frequent.
"I have done it with my older dog," Kris said.
"However it is a matter of being courteous."
Hilltops Council hope that with the new area in place local dog owners will make the most of it.
"The facility, being accessed via the showground, is equipped with dog owner seating and appropriate waste disposal bags to pick up after your dog," a Hilltops Council spokesperson said.
"The facility is a 'bring your own water' site."
The closest water accessible to the public is at the Young Harness Racing stable area.
"Leash free areas are designed to allow dog owners to exercise their pets without a leash in a controlled open environment, not impacting on other recreational area users," the spokesperson said.
"Dog owners are reminded that they are still required to control their dog before and after releasing them for exercise and they must clean up after their animals immediately.
"Council acknowledge the Young Showground Land Manager Board for allowing this complex to be constructed within their grounds."
Locals will need to be mindful that the facility will not always be accessible when there are private functions or the annual show is on.
"As the facility is within the showground, there will be times during major events when access to the facility will be restricted," the spokesperson said.
