Lieutenant Michael Hindle of The Salvation Army Cootamundra-Young branch is urging people to buy an extra present, or knit something nice to donate as part of this year's Christmas Toy Drive.
"Through Christmas time we're asking people to donate new toys or gifts for children to give to families in need or who don't have the finances to buy gifts for their kids, or can't source those presents," Mr Hindle said.
"For any knitters or people who crochet, that can be an idea for really nice things for babies. If it's something purchased from a shop we ask that it stays in its original packaging."
The donated toys will be given to families who have applied for The Salvation Army Christmas Cheer program. Urban Retreat on Lynch Street started taking donations on Monday.
"We want people to celebrate Christmas and to have the festivities. Kids shouldn't miss out. It has to be a magical time for kids," Mr Hindle said.
The program last year helped improve Christmas for about 40 households in Young.
"We have a diverse group of people needing assistance. We're happy to be a part of their journey to the 2019 Christmas," he said.
The Salvos will host a Christmas Day service in Young at 10am at the church building at the corner of Clarke and Boorowa Street.
