Young’s role in state award: The NSW Rural Fire Service and the Aboriginal Lands Council of NSW walked away with a state award on Thursday and Young played a key role in its win. RFS Regional west manager Paul Smith and Bush Fire Resilience for Aboriginal Communities (BRAC) project coordinator David Curry, who are both based at the regional west office in Lovell Street, were recognised at the 2014 NSW Resilient Australia Awards ceremony at NSW Parliament House in Sydney for their project Bush Fire Resilience for Aboriginal Communities (BRAC) Stage II. Doctor crisis a reality: Young's doctor shortage has become very real. Locals these days are getting told, when they ring the two medical centres in town, that the centres' books are closed or the first appointment available is in late October. Or you can go up to the hospital.

Lorraine rewarded for simply caring: Young woman Lorraine Martin was announced the 2014 recipient of Young Shire Council's and Department of Human Services Young's Carers Award. Orchardists meeting results in six recommendations: A Young councillor is calling on council and the community to have an “imperative” role in protecting its fruit industry following Wednesday’s breakfast with local orchardists. Young’s economic development committee hosted the breakfast meeting with the orchardists and a number of councillors in the Young Shire Council Chambers to gain a deeper insight into the industry. It resulted in six recommendations for action.

Record numbers: The local touch football competition is exploding with numbers this year following Round 1 of play on Thursday night.In only it’s third year of operation the competition attracted a whopping 30 teams, with over 350 senior players, 60 juniors and spectators attending on the night - an estimated 900 people in total. Very rare:  Locals dusted off their cherished antiques and family heirlooms on Saturday, packed them in bags, boxes and bubble wrap and headed down to the St Mary’s Parish Centre for the first ever antique and collectibles appraisal day. Organisers counted 40 people registered 132 small items. Council seeks more positive spin: “We really need to lift our game here, move with technology and keep our community better informed,” says Councillor Stuart Freudenstein. The councillor told last week’s monthly council meeting he wanted to see better communication between Young Shire Council and its community. So he turned to the general manager, in the form of a notice of motion, to investigate their options for improvement and he’s received full support from his fellow councillors.

Photographer clicks her way to success: Local photographer Holly Bradford is celebrating her success at a recent national photography competition, with two of her prints winning plaudits from the judges. 
Holly entered the 2014 Canon Australian Professional Photography Awards and came away with two medals.

Warmer weather bodes well for farmers: In a remarkable shift from last week that left most of us unpacking our boots and furs, this will be the week when white flesh will be exposed as the temperatures creep up to 30 degrees by Friday. By no means the midsummer heat we’re used to, nevertheless the mercury’s ascent continues peaking at a predicted 32 degrees Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Then to really freak you out - it’s set to drop down to 23 degrees next Tuesday.

Gardening Australia comes to Young: The farming practices of the Daly family are soon to receive national attention when ABC television’s Gardening Australia runs the first of four specials  that take an in-depth look at the factors that influence plant growth, including water, climate and light. Entitled “A Grand System” the segment, which is to air on November 1, has presenter Angus Stewart talking to Bill and Rhonda Daly of “Milgadara” on the Moppity Road about the large scale composting system they use to increase the health of their soil and crops. Food Hall officially opens: Providing food at affordable rates to DVA or Centrelink Concessional cardholders is what the Young Food Bank’s mission is. And on Saturday it was officially opened amid much fanfare and the cutting of a delicious cake by Tony Gatt of Food Bank NSW. Long-serving teacher farewelled: A LOVELY tribute to one of Young’s teachers has come from North Young Public School principal Kel Smerdon. Mr Smerdon said  Marilyn Bullock had worked at Young North Public School for 18 years and also at Young High School for three years in school administration and management.

Points don’t matter to masters: Young Cherryatrics hosted their sixth annual Masters Rugby League Carnival on Saturday and Sunday, tallying more than 345 people who descended onto Keith Cullen Oval for the matches. McCorkindale finishes Porsche Cup runner-up: The debut year in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge for Jon McCorkindale (second from right) concluded at Phillip Island Raceway recently for the sixth and final round. The Young driver not only picked up second for the round but second in the championship point standings.

Reversing car stops traffic:  Pedestrians, staff and a driver were lucky to escape injury on Wednesday morning when a car crashed into the front window of Blooms Pharmacy. A 76-year-old woman backed her white Mazda 626 into the Boorowa Street pharmacy at about 9.35am, which had one staff member running for cover and halting traffic for a short period. A year of big moves for country star Sami: After 88 shows Australia-wide, three music videos and having moved out of home, Young country singer Sami Cooke will be capping off a very busy milestone year come December. A fair day out at Maimuru: Maimuru Public School will be holding its Spring Fair on Saturday with an action-packed day of activities planned. There will be plenty to keep the whole family entertained with stalls, a jumping castle, fairy floss, pony rides, face painting and a barbecue. Students Lilly Edgerton, Zac Dodge, Tom Egginton, Angus Steenbergen, Cheyenne-Lee Hills and Madison Gembles help fill the lucky dip jars that will be available on the day.

Queen entrants Sydney-bound for market cherry auction: Young Cherry Queen entrants will meet the city media and experience the auctioning of the first case of cherries for the 2014 season when they travel to Sydney next week.  Emily Hardy, Jessica Saines and Caitlin Muller will visit the Sydney fruit markets on Wednesday.

$5m drug crop: farmer faces sentencing: A Crowther man will be sentenced in the District Court after he admitted his part in cultivating $5 million worth of cannabis. Malcolm Roy Howarth, 62, pleaded guilty in Young Local Court on Tuesday to knowingly taking part in cultivating a large commercial quantity of a prohibited plant. Howarth was arrested when a Crowther property was raided on February 12.

Locals enjoy academic success: Ann Mae Maxwell from Young said she felt “very good” when she recently graduated with a Bachelor of Communication in Journalism from the University of Canberra. She will be continuing a career in marketing.

Young’s Laura Maree Ferguson felt “relieved” after graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Canberra. The former Hennessy Catholic College captain will be studying for her Masters in Occupational Therapy.


Hundreds turn up for native plants: Last Saturday’s Native Plant Giveaway, organised by Young District Landcare (YDL), was a huge success, with hundreds of local residents coming to Arboretum Park to choose their free plants. Main street resurface likely now in new year: The imminent resurfacing of Boorowa Street will prove a big task for council, onlookers of their last monthly meeting have heard. According to Mr Wymer, issues with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) had to be ironed out and a steering committee sorted to drive street closures and approach local businesses, before a timeframe could be set.

Five ready to train with Raiders: Five teenagers from Young have been selected for the Canberra Raiders train-on squads in the Under 16s and Under 18s. They'll be heading to Canberra three times a week for training and will play a series of trial matches before the Raiders announce the final teams. Will weekend’s top point winner: Milvale's William Day has topped the points tally for the weekend at the NSW Team Yarders finals in Temora. Twelve locals, including Day, were among the 57 open teams of four and 14 junior teams of four who competed in the finals at Temora Showground on Saturday and Sunday. Masters Carnival declared a success: The Young Cherryatrics hosted a great two days of masters rugby league last weekend that included the anticipated first City versus Country match. From the City team - Coach Geoff Lucas, manager Andy Smith, Brett Maxwell, Lee Hardy, Greg Smith, Sean Besgrove, Brendan Laws, Ben Buttiphant, Brian Parks, Simon Quale, Roy Jewett, Mick Hudson, Craig Baxter. Terry Harkness, John Drabsch, Wayne Porter, Bruce LLoyd, David O’Keefe, Grant Russell and Nathan Griffin.

The Country team consisted of The Country side (in no particular order) consisted of coach Ray Spring, manager Paul Aston, Jamie Patterson, Jason Towman, Mat Fraser, Geoff Harmer, Noel Schiller, Dave Porter, Paul Besgrove, Jim Carberry, Mick Kirkman, Nathan Taylor, Stuart Gay, Mark Horne, Neil Epplestun, Garry Lucas, Lyndon Sheppard, Ian Close, Steve Woolford and Geoff Hill. 

Finals done and dusted: The Young Services Club Squash Club’s winter competition wrapped up with the finals and grand finals played last week. A Grade teams Neon Media and Job Centre went head-to-head in the grand final, which saw Neon Media claim victory.
