Rain, hail or shine Wills ensures it’ll be a great day out with more than 2500 punters expected to flock to Toompang Racecourse for the 130th year of the annual picnic races in Young.
“This rain will brighten the place up a bit and soften the top of the track. We wouldn’t be too worried if it rains on the day, a nice day would be good but everyone will enjoy it either way, it’ll still be a great day,” Wills said.

Regular racegoers will remember the 2016 edition was abandoned due to wet but it didn’t stop punters from enjoying a day at the track.
“That’s not likely to happen this year it will take pretty heavy showers for the races to be cancelled. But there’s plenty of shelter so we’ll be out there either way,” Wills said.
The six-race program will be headlined by the $5,500 Delta Agribusiness and Incitec Pivot Burrangong Picnic Cup (1400m).
Wills highlighted the support of the community, sponsors and the committee.
“The committee has done a really good job and we thank the generosity of local businesses,” he said.
“Essentially all we have is the course. We have to organise all food, licencing and staff. All the sponsors we have to source. Everyone is very generous year in year out, that’s what makes it possible.”

Aside from the action on track, racegoers will have the opportunity to have their face-painted, enjoy rides, a jumping castle or enter fashions in the field for a chance to win a share of $3,500 prizemoney on offer.
“We try and cater for everyone and make it a family outing,” Wills said.
Buses will run to and from the track about every 20 minutes from the Aussie Hotel from 11.45am till 7pm.
Race one jumps at 1.15pm.
