Young's NSW Fire and Rescue crew responded to the call while extinguishing an unrelated grass fire on Spring Creek Road about 5.15pm.
Fire had engulfed the backyard and was threatening the Thornhill Street home however firefighters swiftly controlled the blaze.
No occupants were inside the home, while about 10 children and teachers in the neighbouring childcare centre self-evacuated.
While there was no damage to property, Young Fire and Rescue's Sam Woods said a home could have potentially been burnt down.
"It was easy to put out but there was potential for the home to be lost. All grass in the backyard had caught alight and flames were lapping up against the home," he said.
Police are investigating the incident and have multiple lines of inquiry which they are pursuing, Young Police Inspector Jacob Reeves said.
"It was a reckless and stupid act with potential to burn down one or more homes," he said.
Earlier, the Fire and Rescue crew responded to calls of a grass fire under the Spring Creek Road bridge about 5.04pm.
Mr Woods said his crew was able to extinguish 90 per cent of flames and begin blacking out surrounding areas before handing over to Rural Fire Service crews.
This was unrelated and is not under police investigation.
