Allan John Kidd, 21, was ordered to enter an intensive corrections order for 15 months and complete 200 community service when he was sentenced at Young Local Court on Wednesday, January 13.
According to facts tendered at court, police observed Kidd holding a rifle style gel blaster in the backyard of a residence in Young, about 3pm on August 13 last year.
Police stopped and questioned Kidd about what he was holding.
He said it was "a gel blaster, a toy gun".
Police were taken to a shed in the backyard where they observed the rifle style gel blaster and a pistol style gel blaster.
Inside the shed, police found 66.04g of cannabis.
A police statement reveals Kidd wasn't aware if the weapons were legal or illegal.
"I bought them for a bit of fun," police say Kidd told them.
At court, Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis told Kidd he needed to start acting like an adult.
"Gel blasters are so serious there's 14 years maximum jail. If you're going to do something illegal, find out what the consequences are," Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis said.
Kidd pleaded guilty and was convicted for charges of not keeping firearms safely, two counts of possessing unregistered firearms and possession of cannabis.
Magistrate Ellis also made orders for Kidd to enter community corrections orders for 18 months with conditions to abstain from alcohol and drugs.
