Fashion that stops Young: There’s been nothing but praise coming from all corners of the Young Shire following this year’s Burrangong Picnic Races on Saturday. The event attracted it's biggest field in years, with up to 3000 people descending on Toompang Racecourse. X-Factor star surprises residents: X-Factor singer Justin Standley made an unexpected visit to the residents of the Young Southern Cross Retirement Village on Friday. The top 12 finalist in the 2012 series from Bundaberg was in town on Thursday night as the special guest for the Cherry Capital Country Music Association  (CCCMA) fundraiser talent quest. Students put to the test: HSC exams kicked off on Monday for Young's Year 12 students, sitting their first paper for English at 10.30am. Police seize drugs in Nasmyth Street: Police seized cannabis and drug paraphernalia when they executed a search warrant at a Nasmyth Street home on Friday, October 10. Police and drug detection dogs searched the home at about 3pm. 

Breakfast with an impact: Young’s Economic Development Committee hosted a breakfast meeting with local orchardists in the Young Shire Council Chambers last Wednesday to gain a deeper insight into the industry. Sights set on 2015: THE dust has barely settled on the Group Nine grand final, but Young captain-coach Luke Branighan already has his sights firmly set on 2015. Oldest ARL Master in our midst: The Young Cherryatrics had the great honour of having the oldest ARL Masters player at their sixth annual carnival at the weekend. The Murringo Club nominated two sides for the carnival - Mongrels and Dingoes - and among the players was 84-year-old Tony Young.

Big days on croquet court: The Young Croquet Club hosted their annual spring carnival over four days last week which attracted 42 players from around the state and Victoria. Organisers were pleased they had a larger number of local players competing this year compared to previous years. Half mast debate: Councillor Stuart Freudenstein demanded answers at Young Shire Council's September meeting after the Young Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch chose not to fly their flag at half mast for the MH17 flight victims recently. He demanded to know why the flag in Anderson Park – belonging to and operated by Young RSL sub-branch – wasn’t lowered to half mast on August 7 when prime minister Tony Abbott declared it a national day of mourning for the victims onboard Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. Young cadets a winning team: The Young RFS cadets have maintained their championship status after winning two titles at this year’s NSW Rural Fire Service State Championships and ranking fifth in the state. Woman shaken after cars collide: A 21-year-old woman was left shaken after a ute pulled out in front of her vehicle at the Lovell Street and Lynch Street intersection on Tuesday morning. The 58-year-old male from Harden, driving a grey ute, was travelling east in Lovell Street at 10.20am when he attempted to turn right into Lynch Street.

Eight schools crunch and sip: Eight local schools are among the 1814 schools around the state who know how important healthy eating and staying hydrated is, that’s why they’ve all adopted the NSW government’s new Crunch and Sip program. Primary schools at St Mary’s, Young Public, Murringo, Koorawatha, Bribbaree and Maimuru, as well as Greenethorpe and Quandialla have integrated healthy eating and drinking water regularly into their daily classroom routines.

Native plants being given away this weekend: Young District Landcare were giving away free local native plants to Young residents last week. The plant giveaway was part of a project titled “Microbats in the Young Shire” and was a habitat enhancement and community awareness campaign.

Races hailed a success: The Young Witness snapped plenty of locals out and about at Young's social calendar event of the year, the Burrangong Picnic Races. New track record: With a number of in-form gallopers nominated and jockeys who had mostly competed with success the previous day at Lockhart, the quality of racing at the Burrangong Picnic Races at Toompany Racecourse was again of the highest standard. Racing opened with an 800 metre dash. The time of 0-44.10H on Saturday beat the club record 0-44.75H previously set by Doubly Vain in 1997. Photo by Paul Neville.

NEW RFS HQ: Young is one of two shires a proposed multi-million dollar state-of-the-art Rural Fire Service zone headquarters may call home in the near future. But there's one Galong resident who believes there's no need for a new "palace for the South West RFS bureaucrats to parade in". The South West RFS disagreed, saying they had outgrown their current premises (pictured) in Harden and that it was outdated and "grossly inadequate. Photo supplied.

$2.4m upgrade for Lovell Street: THE LOVELL Street B-double route is to be upgraded thanks to a $2.4 million funding subsidy from the state government. In a joint announcement on Tuesday, Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson and Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole announced that a number of B-double routes in the Young Shire will be upgraded thanks to the subsidy under Round Three of the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme (LIRS).

Coaching for local teachers, US style: Hennessy Catholic College want to get the best out of their students and staff, so they’ve turned to a coach in the United States to learn how. Gary Bloom - who specialises in supporting teachers and developing coaching cultures - travelled from his hometown of Santa Cruz in California to Young for three days last week meeting with the school’s executive staff, academic coordinators, the education community and civil leaders. Christmas shopping changes: The Young and District Chamber of Commerce hosted a special Christmas retail meeting to discuss ways to help local retailers and Young shoppers make the most of their busiest time of year. The gathering attracted 25 retailers who  discussed and agreed upon having extended trading hours, with plans to start Thursday night and weekend shopping from November 13. Dot stars in Aspire magazine: An article featured in an autumn edition of UnitingCare Ageing’s Aspire magazine about Young's Dot Jeffries and her hometown not just being a place to live. It talks about Dot always being on the go as president, secretary, social secretary, publicity officer and caterer for the Combined Pensioners and Superannuates Association in Young for the past 18 years.

Ray’s golden era in business:  Local man Ray Kinlyside has operated his retail businesses from the same family-owned Young site for 50 years. He has also jet-setted across the globe and been involved in advertising campaign negotiations with internationally renowned movie distributors as a former board member of Video Ezy. A match for the masters: The annual Young Cherryatrics Masters Rugby League Carnival was conducted on the weekend at Keith Cullen Oval with 19 sides attending.


Last round of racing for 2014: Young Motorcycle Club hosted Round 5 of the Young Tyre Power Club Championships -  the final round for the 2014 racing season - at ‘Bunyarra’ on the Grenfell Road on Sunday. Organisers expected a large field of riders traveling to compete.
