Last weekend the Young Lions men’s third grade bundled out of the Blake Trophy premiership race going down 2-1 in extra-time to Wagga United.

The boys started in great form, peppering the United goal repeatedly. The passing was linking for Young and United could not find any room through the middle of the park.
The Lions eventually found success when Javarn Hurcum gathered a nice pass and calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper to give Young a 1-0 lead. But even though Young were dominating the game in the first half, they could not find a second goal and this would eventually cost them.

In the second half it appeared as though a different team was playing for Young as the intensity went out of their attack. As a result United managed to strike back with a goal of their own when Young failed to clear the ball.
The game then became an arm wrestle but neither team could find a second goal, so the score remained deadlocked after 90 minutes at full-time. Therefore the game was to go into extra-time and another 30 minutes of play was required.
In the first stanza United found Young’s net for a second time off another United corner. Young then pushed hard, throwing bodies forward hitting the cross bar and narrowly missing. United held on for a 2-1 win ending Young’s run towards the grand final.

“I could not be prouder of the boys. Our plan for this year was to use the grade as a training tool for boys wanting to play seniors and progress to first grade but we nearly ended up winning it all,” Ray Mitchell said.
“We were a team of old men and young teenagers, we had an incredible year.”
